It is gratuitous of course to say that errors of any kind are my sole responsibility. --Preface of the book; This collection consists of observations on Philippines writing and culture originally presented as remarks at gatherings of writers, cultural workers, and academicians from 1988 to 1989. Only three were intended as articles for journals. None were written for scholarly or esoteric reasons. All were meant to be read by those concerned about a society in crisis. Of course, I cannot be sure about their reception. Returning in late 1985 after thirteen years abroad, I did not anticipate that opportunities to speak before groups would yield a number of drafts that became the basis for this collection.
