N2  - Facilitates for a reeaxamination of the role of traditional cultures within a contemporary Asian context as well as for an examination of how these tradtional cultures have interacted with Western cultural paradigms. Artists manifested a tendency to shun away from Euro-American paradigms toward engaging with their immediate environments and used indigenous forms, materials and technology. It was observed that in early 1980s, Malaysian art showed neo-regionalist tendencies. Some artists raised social,economic and political concerns to reasses a more complex and multicultural matrix
