British, Filipino, and Spanish historians participated in the presentations and there were many more Filipino participants in the debates that took place at the University of Santo Tomas and the Ateneo de Manila. History has made our peoples what we are today-and it all started with Philip. We already have acknowledged that, and it would only be wise to keep the direction that we have taken in recent times. History, no matter how painful it might be, cannot be changed, but it is in our hands to make the most out of it. And now we have a golden opportunity to do so. That is perhaps the light in which the reading of the pages that follow can be of better use to the Filipino student of history, and to the Spanish history student, too. If, apart from being useful, it can also provide some inspiration and provoke a constructive reflection, the 1999 Manila Symposium will fully have achieved its objectives. Damaso de Lario
