AU - Gordon, Alan, TI - American chronicle: six decades in American life, 1920-1980 SN - 689119011 AV - E 169.1 .G656a 1987 PY - 1987/// CY - New York PB - Atheneum N2 - This is a marvelous reminiscence source. Though not as comprehensive as The People's Chronology, edited by James Trager ( LJ 9/1/79), it is more readable and illustrated with many classic photos. The highlights of each decade are reviewed, with vital economic, social, and consumer statistics included. For each year all aspects of life are coveredquotations, fashions, fads, first appearances, etc. Among the entertaining facts: a 1950 poll of librarians rated Moby Dick as one of the most boring books. Although the lack of an index is a drawback, this is a useful purchase for public, school, and academic libraries. Christine Bulson, SUNY at Oneonta Lib.
