Treasure and Tales of beautiful women lured Hernando Cortez and his conquistadores to the Vermilion Sea, a large body of water lying off the west coast of Mexico. Farther west was "California." Though originally a fanciful invention of a Spanish writer, it was believed to be an island paradise rich with gold pearls, and fair women, all of them awaiting the white man.
