The book examines the image of nationhood transcoded in monuments. Monuments are read akin to a text in which the modes of representation become the analytical trajectory. The monument, together with its sculptural elements and location, is seen to bear, transmit, and communicate meanings in a linguistic sense. A combination of observational research, secondary research, and semiotic analysis is undertaken to analyze the modus in which national identity has been transcribed in monuments created in the various stage of Philippine history.
