The increasing concern of late 20th century humans for wholistic approaches may also be taken as a timely guiding perspective in the study of literature. There is a special need now to apply new integrated approaches to areas of study ordinarily considered unbridgeable or disparate. This is the case with regards the literature of Africa and Asia. A new gestalt must be made to operate in one's understanding of their literary cultures if one is to clarify the role they play in a world literature so far dominated by Western literary criteria. To this end, the following annotated bibliography of selected readings was drawn up and this perspective/preface written to structure the reader's approach to this vast subject.
