the presidency, Cory's destiny. --The Introduction of the book.
Corazon (Cory) Aquino is the president of the Philippines who is the subject of this story: her background, education, and the life and the combination and intertwining of forces and circumstances that catapulted the heretofore reluctant widow to the highest post in the land within the gift of her people. Benigno (Ninoy) S. Aquino Jr. was her martyred husband who aspired for and was inching his way towards the presidency of his country when he was arrested and imprisoned upon the declaration of martial law by President Marcos. In prison, he felt God meant him for other things and thus, wittingly or unwittingly, he had prepared his shy, supportive wife, Cory-with whom he shared his dreams, his vision of his country where justice, freedom and democracy reigned-to take his place and thereby realize the dreams and aspirations he lived and died for. Martyrdom was Ninoy's fate
