Entries consist mostly of individuals: religious, historical, and mythological. Literary characters and their authors are also included, as are themes of art- historical relevance, symbols, attributes, and personifications. Many of the works featured communicate important messages through personification- the embodiment of an abstract concept or quality in human form. Each chapter explains the significance and meaning of key symbols and figures within a major subject area of Western art. The key paintings shown at the beginning of each chapter- 75 in all- are the ones that are especially rich in symbolism or complex in their meaning. After each group of key paintings comes a thematic reference section for the subject area in question, with major symbols and figures highlighted and explained.
