The musical cultures in ASEAN member countries represent an amalgam of repertoires of considerable diversity, whose individual identities transcend national boundaries. Their ethnic and cultural bases number in the hundreds, each one having a distinct aesthetic perspective as well as history of an evolving musical literature. Aside from the disparity between individual cultures due in part to their natural and physical environments, the different levels and degrees of absorbing outside influences added to their discrete uniqueness. --From the introduction
