The origins of this short story lies in a dinner conversation I had with a well-respected journalist early October 1992. The journalist, the principal columnist of a major Philippine newspaper, informed me that one of the personalities I discussed in Some Are Smarter Than Others, a book circulated in Manila earlier in the year, had protested his inclusion in the work. The individual, mentioned in the section of the book discussing the country's telephone monopoly, defended himself by saying I had merely based my account on a single story coming from the Wall Street Journal and there was therefore not much merit either in his inclusion in Some Are Smarter Than Others or in my account in general. --From the preface
