What is this book about? The subject of these essays is how members of the contemporary middle classes look at life and how they understand it. It is this outlook and understanding that is called their culture. In other words, culture is seen as knowledge. This knowledge informing the practice of everyday life is only partly conscious. In the course of ordinary life, people are not aware of the whys and background of their action and views
