520			_aAs the years go by the Philippines as well as the entire world takes deeper cognizance of the transcendental influence of Rizal upon the mode of life of his dearly cherished people. The youth increasingly return to the rich fountain of Rizal's wisdom and drink deep of his beautiful inspiration. In the last quarter of a century Rizal's many-faceted genius has been glowingly described by eminent scholars and admirers of the Great Malayan. His life has been the subject of varied and excellent biographical studies from Retana through Austin Craig and Palma to Carlos Quirino. Rizal's contributions to education and economics, however, have scarcely been touched in the many books, written about him, with the possible exception of Camilo Osias' essays and articles which deal primarily with Rizal as a teacher of his people. The authors of this volume, therefore, feel that a study of the Filipino hero's ideas and ideals on education and on the economic uplift of the Philippines is an indispensable necessity to a full understanding of the people and the country that Rizal so dearly loved. The new Republic of the Philippines has taken its place in the sisterhood of free nations. With America's help and Filipino fortitude, the young Republic is taking rapid and long strides forward and is now resolved to live in perfect peace and amity with the rest of the world. To all Filipinos the blueprint of their country's progress in education and economics was laid down long ago. by Dr. Jose Rizal, the paladin of Filipino manhood and resourcefulness. For Rizal lived ahead of his time and foresaw, in the manner of Tennyson, the wonderful achievements in commerce, trade, industry, and in world-fellowship which are now occupying the mind and conscience of humanity.
