520 _aThis collection of essays by Raul Pertierra is a revelation. By focusing anthropological analysis on developments such as the nation-state and on the globalization of information, the essays suggest that, for an understanding of contemporary society, some acquaintance with anthropology is indispensable. At the same time the abstractions of the essays imply that anthropology is more than just narration and description. Like any social science, it ultimately seeks to transform a systematic theory about society that is grounded in empirical data. As such therefore it must at time take several steps beyond those famous, detailed descriptions of the discipline's ethnographies and posit abstract relationships that can account for the implicit patterns.
