As the title implies, it presents a comprehensive view of the growth of the Philippines into a nation and Rizal's role in the process. Unlike other existing texts used today, this book implements the recent suggestion from the Department of Education, Culture and Sports to integrate the life and works of the Philippine national hero with the total fabric of Philippine history and not just teach his life and writing exclusively. The approach has the advantage of enabling the student to understand not only how Philippine society produced a man like Jose Rizal, but also why such a man appeared at that moment in Philippine history. The earlier method is too narrow and risks taking Rizal out of context. --From the preface | ||
