Tan, former Chairman and Professor in the Department of History of the University of the Philippines and presently Chairman and Executive DIrector of the National Historical Institute, offers a conceptual framework of what he calls "the story of man in the Philippines" in the context of "the specific ecological system" and distinctive historical experience" that have shaped his "particular character and identity."
