520 _aThe epic poetry of Balagtas is best exemplified in Florante at Laura. A love story set in Albania against a backdrop of conflict between Christians and Muslims in an ancient era, it has withstood the test of time, and still sparks the imagination of those who read it. Today, it continues to enjoy numerous retellings in stage plays, movies, exhibitions and even animation. Joining that ever-growing list is this edition of Florante at Laura. This book is made special by several significant features, primarily the reconstruction of Balagtas' text by National Artist and UP College of Arts and Letter Dean Virgillio S. Almario. This UP Centennial edition also bares a new translation in English by award-winning poet Marne L. Kilates. Placed side with the reconstructed Filipino text, the translation offers fresh insights to a Philippine literacy classic. This book also features artworks created for the Florante at Laura exhibition which was presented as part of the Komedya Fiesta 2008 1st National Festival. Among the activities celebrating the UP Centennial, the exhibit sought to celebrate both literature and the visual arts.
