The expansion reflects material that has come to my attention since publication of the original article, particularly material drawn from the archives and historical societies of the four western states whose volunteers took part in the actions described. The main purpose of the original article was to correct the historical neglect of the action at Balic balic at the onset of the Philippine American War. This book extends the narrative to the capture of the polvorin (powder house) and deposito (reservoir) in San Juan following the fall of the blockhouses.
