The informal sector with its gamut of definitions, is best understood through borderless portraits, brief descriptive sketches, self-contained expressions of situations-all emphasizing features and qualities of informal work and workers -like vignettes that fade off at the edges. The students of the University of the Philippines' School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SOLAIR) in Labor and the Economy (IR204) who initially felt coerced by the task to conduct interviews with informal workers, eventually felt privileged, at the very least, of the work they have. . . of the life they now enjoy. The countries stories of work that is not in any way formal, in stature of contour, like a ball of yarn-rich in color, fiber and texture, rolled-out lithely. The colors of happiness and contentment amidst hardship, the fibers of perseverance interspersed with creativity and the textures of constancy and dignity of informal work life, vividly, often poignantly, articulated peril and that appreciation for one's work should be de riguer.
