520 _a"School bullying and cyberbullying are widely recognized as an international problem, but publications have focused on the western tradition of research. In India, recognition of these issues and research on the topics have been emerging in recent years. Beginning with cross-cultural differences across Indian, European and Australian contexts, this volume provides direct empirical comparisons between western and Indian situations. It then discusses innovative ways of hearing the views of students, pre-service teachers and teachers, featuring a range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The concluding commentaries from North American investigators provide a further international perspective from another region where much progress in researching these areas has been made. Together this ground-breaking collection comprises contributions from four continents on the prevalent issues of bullying, cyberbullying and student well-being"--

520 _a"Peter K Smith, Suresh Sundaram, Damanjit Sandhu, Catherine Blaya, Mechthild Schafer, Barbara Spears This chapter gives a brief overview of previous work carried out internationally on school bullying and cyberbullying, including evidence for its negative effects. The relatively limited research base in India is then considered. In the second half of the chapter we summarize the kinds of school systems in the four European countries represented in this book (England, France, Germany, Netherlands), Australia, and India (especially in the states of Punjab and Tamil Nadu). This is to provide a context for the chapters which follow. Brief history of research on school bullying and cyberbullying Bullying is generally defined as a form of aggressive behavior (with an intent to harm others), characterized by repetition and imbalance of power (Olweus, 2013). In western society, the image of a larger child attacking a smaller one, not just once but on a regular basis, epitomizes this kind of bullying, or harassment, in the school years"--
