Presents contributions grouped into five sections . The First Section - Contains the initial contributions by Shirai and Schacter focus on theoretical underpinnings and examine the ways in which work in generative linguistics has indirectly influenced second language teaching by influencing second language acquisition research which in turn generated implications fro sylabus design ,textbook preparation and even choice of program model . The Second Section - presents next set of four contributions by Oxford , Gardner , Singleton , and Debot examine diverse aspects of individual learner characteristics as they impinge upon and affect second language learning and retention in disparate formal non- formal settings throughout the world .The Third Section - Reviews issues related to the delivery of instruction . The Fourth Section - Examines aspects of teacher prearation . The Fifth Section - Comprises an examination of innovative language education programs in seven purposefully regions of the world .
